Bulldog wrestlers dominating opponents

The Becker Bulldogs wrestling team continues to dominate its opponents, as they picked up six convincing wins in the past two weeks.

February 4th, the team mauled the Mora Mustangs by a score of 46-16.

“It was a nice win against Mora,” said coach Matt Aho.  “They have several ranked wrestlers and they have been a very competitive team for us throughout the last few years. There were some very tight matches in that dual, as we won three matches that went into overtime.”

Both programs are familiar with one another after wrestling together in the Granite Ridge Conference for several years.  Becker picked up wins in 11 of the 14 matches and once again showed strength at the upper weights, there they picked up three of their four pins in the match.

Becker wins: Kaden Nicolas (major decision 106), Landen Kujawa (decision 113), Drew May (decision 120), Ethan Duncombe (decision 132), Kaden Rish (decision 138), Lukas Paulson (fall 145), Mason Doucette (decision 152), Adam Jurek (decision 160), Kylen Rish (fall 170), Caden DeWall (fall 195), Dylan Kolby (fall 285).

58-9 over Huskies

February 5th, the Bulldogs wrestled in a Triangular and completely dominated the competition.  They opened the night with a drubbing of the Albany Huskies.  After splitting the first four matches, Becker went on a tear and won the final 10 matches.

Becker wins: Nicolas (tech fall 106), Kujawa (fall 113), Duncombe (fall 132), Rish (fall 138), Paulson (major decision 145), Doucette (major decision 152), Jurek (decision 160), Rish (fall 170), Tyson Ricker (decision 182), DeWall (forfeit 195), Bryce Kuschel (decision 220), Kolby (forfeit 285).

Blank the Sting

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs went a perfect 14-0 in matches en route to a 75-0 shutout win over Spectrum High School.  The Sting were completely overmatched with their thin lineup, but did give a few Becker wrestlers a good match.

“Spectrum is a newer team with a first year head coach, so they are just getting underway,” said Aho.  “They also had several forfeits in their lineup. However, Landen Kujawa did have to beat a ranked wrestler from Spectrum to help us get the shoutout.”

Despite the lopsided scores, Aho continues to be happy with how hard his athletes are working to keep improving as the season progresses.  Recently, the MSHSL announced there will be postseason competition so the coaches and players are focused on peaking at the right time.

“Albany and Spectrum are both teams that are in our section,” said Aho.   “So, the wins we had against them are important come section time.”

Becker wins: Nicolas (fall 106), Kujawa (decision 113), May (fall 120), Ryan Boecker (forfeit 126), Duncombe (fall 132), Rish (decision 138), Paulson (forfeit 145), Doucette (forfeit 152), Jurek (decision 160), Rish (forfeit 170), Dylan Weber (fall 182), DeWall (forfeit 195), Bryce Kuschel (forfeit 220), Kolby (forfeit 285).

Taming the cats

Last Thursday, the team picked up a conference win by taming the Chisago Lakes Wildcats by a score of 71-9.  Becker picked up seven forfeit wins in the match and also saw Kylen Rish record his 100th win as a Becker Bulldog.

The same night, Becker nearly shut out the Rush City / Braham Tigers, coming up with a 74-4 victory.  Becker amassed 10 pins in the contest, many within the first period.

Metro Mauling

Last Friday, the team traveled to the metro area and came away with two impressive wins: 84-0 over Columbia Heights and 63-15 over Fridley.

In the opening win over the Hylanders, Caden DeWall picked up his 100th career win.  It was a night of perfection for the Bulldogs, as they scored 84 team points and surrendered zero.  Nine forfeits and five pins led to the lopsided affair.

In the win over the Fridley Tigers, the Bulldogs continued their dominance over the feline mascot teams and were aided by six pins.  A big highlight for Becker was Lukas Paulson’s 150th career victory.
