It was a great season opener for the Becker boys track team, as the Bulldogs came out on top of the field with 76 points to defeat Chisago Lakes, Princeton, Zimmerman and Big Lake.
Coach Paul Schmidt was proud of his squad, as they did it despite a number of injuries to his most experienced athletes.
Senior Captain, Owen Angell led the way, winning the 55 hurdles and high jump events, while he was also part of the winning 4x200 relay team along with Tarver Schendzielos, Tristan Kowalkowski, and Clayton Hamacher.
The Becker 4x800 team of Tanner Felton, Evan Hubbard, Brandt Hemmelgarn, and Parker Spindler ran a nice time of 8:41 to win that event, and the 4x400 team of Isiah Boyer, Evan Hubbard, Tanner Felton, and Parker Spindler won that event as well with a time of 3:45.80.
Boyer also took first in the 400 with a time of 55.96 and Ethan Basgil grabbed fourth place in the same event with a time of 59.52.
Tristan Kowalkowski ran an excellent indoor 200 finishing second with a time of 24.68 and Dalton Weisz added a fourth place finish with a time of 25.23.
In the field events, Schendzielos won the long jump with a leap of 21’ 6”, while Weisz took third in the Pole Vault with a jump of 10’ 6”. Jon Bender was fourth in the pole vault by eclipsing 10’ and Jackson Ewing took fifth with a vault of 8’6”.
Quad Meet
Last week, the Becker boys track team hosted a quad meet with Cambridge-Isanti taking the top spot, followed by Becker, North Branch, and Zimmerman.
Tarver Schendzielos continued to impress during the early season with a winning long jump of 20’6” and a third place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 23.67. Tarver was also part of the second place 4x200 relay team along with Tristan Kowalkowski, Dalton Weisz, and Clayton Hamacher.
“Owen Angell continues to lead for the upperclassmen winning the 55 M Hurdles, tying for first in the high jump (5’10”), finishing second in the pole vault with a vault of 14’ and finishing third in the 55 M dash with a time of 6.77,” Coach Paul Schmidt said.
Sophomore Isiah Boyer who was named Track Athlete of the week, as he finished with a first in the 400M where he remained undefeated for the season. He was then the anchor in a close finish in the 4x400 relay which yielded a second place, as he competed with Ethan Basgil, Brandt Hemmelgarn, and Evan Hubbard.
Becker went 1-2-3 in the 800 M with Tanner Felton winning the event with a time of 2:04.15, Evan Hubbard second (2:08.37) and Hemmelgarn taking third (2:15.61).
Parker Spindler took second in the 1600 with a time of 4:46, while Saul Kreft took fourth in the Shot Put (38’4”) and Justin Tarr finished fourth in the 55 hurdles for the Bulldogs.
This week the Bulldogs traveled to Big Lake on Tuesday and then were in Zimmerman on Thursday the 10th of April for their first outdoor meets.
