BL wrestlers sweep home triangular meet

The Big Lake wrestling team won both matches at a home triangular meet last Friday.

The Hornets beat Sauk Rapids-Rice, 47-21 and Albany, 57-15

Against Sauk-Rapids-Rice, Hayden Bessette opened with an 18-0 tech fall over McKenzie Wagman-Kelley at 107 pounds; Grant Volk had a forfeit win at 114; At 121, Big Lake’s Elijah Schaller beat Carter Barz, 8-4; At 127, Gavin Jones pinned Bryce Ness at 3:44; Cash Stortz lost by disqualification at 133; At 139, Alex Omann beat Dylan Gapinski, 19-11; Jack Hess of the Hornets pinned Jackson Jennings at 1:53 at 145 pounds; At 152, Dallas Sibbet pinned Brody Schraut at 1:24; Nathan Lieser of Sauk Rapids pinned Hser Kaw at 1:56 at 160 pounds; At 172, Christian Nelson pinned Big Lake’s Caleb Smith at 6:07; Carson Gellerman pinned Isaac Thiele at 1:57 at 189 pounds; Big Lake’s Liam Mayer lost a 14-7 decision to Chris Smith at 215 pounds; At 285: Pablo Solano-Vega pinned Taylin Nahouakhong of Sauk Rapids at 0:52.

Against an incomplete Albany team, the Hornets had a number of forfeit wins. The results:

MNGWL Qualifier

Last Saturday the younger Hornets finished 10th as a team with 77 points at the MNGWL Region 7 Ninth Grade and Under Qualifier in Milaca. Seven Hornets finished in the top six spots in their weight division.

Bryson Kipka took second at 160 pounds. After a bye, the eighth-grader pinned Triton Tatum of Foley at 2:20. He followed with a pin of Easton Braun of Paynesville at 1:13. He lost a 12-0 decision to Teddy Auer of Holdingford, but came back to pin Nathan Lieser of Sauk Rapids-Rice at 2:09 in his final match.

At 189, seventh-grader William Duncombe had three bye wins and finished third.

Pablo Solano-Vega took third at 285 pounds. The ninth-grader lost by pin to Oliver Miller of Mora. Then he had three bye wins before beating Taylin Nahouakhong of Sauk Rapids-Rice, 11-6 in his final match.

At 94 pounds, eighth-grader Hayden Bessette placed fourth. He opened with loss by pin to Trip Toops of Pierz. He came back to pin Ethan Swindra of Foley at 0:37, then lost an 11-3 decision to Jack McGrew of Sartell-St. Stephen in his final match.

At 172, Jack Lehto took fifth. The ninth-grader opened by pinning Jack Harlander of Holdingford at 1:00. He lost by pin to Mathew Bohler of Princeton, then beat Otto Lang of Sartell-St. Stephen by 16-0 tech fall. After losing by pin to Mason Zwilling of Sauk Rapids-Rice, he beat Mathew Bohler of Princeton again by 18-3 tech fall in his final match.

 At 152, John Westvig finished sixth. The eighth-grader lost his first match by pin to Tucker Koch of Mora. After a bye, he pinned Mason Lumley of Becker at 1:26 before losing by tech fall to Jack Kohl of Princeton. He lost by pin to Heath Erickson of Milaca in his final match.

Rier Fox had two bye wins and finished sixth at 145 pounds.
