The Big Lake American Legion baseball team saw its season come to an end in the first round of the Subsection 10 Playoffs last week.
The Hornets fell behind early and never recovered in an 11-1 loss to Annandale.
Big Lake got its only run and its only lead in the top of the first when Austin Schleif had a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single by Blayne Varner. With two outs, Connor Lundquist singled to left field to drive home Schleif for a 1-0 lead.
But that was the only bright spot in the game for the Hornets. Jeffery Wanhala started on the mound and had control problems from the beginning. Annandale racked up eight runs in the inning on four walks, two hit batters, a single, two wild pitches, a passed ball and an error that led to three unearned runs.
Nehemiah Rousu came in to get three outs on a fielders choice and a double play. But the damage had already been done.
The Hornets couldn’t put anything together on offense to get back in the game. Varner’s single in the fourth was Big Lake’s only baserunner the rest of the way.
Annandale extended its lead with three runs in the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Big Lake finished the season at 5-15. Luke Lindquist picked up the win for Annandale, who were scheduled to take on Wayzata in the next round.
