Dozens of people gathered at Warner Lake Park in Clearwater last week for the 10th Annual Walk For Hope, sponsored by Clearwater Travel Plaza.
Most were dressed in pink - the color to signify their fight against breast cancer. Many walkers were participating in memory of a loved one. For some, it was just a way to show support for anyone who has had, or is fighting breast cancer.
“We’ve been doing this for quite a few years. We started doing it with a work group,” said Melissa, a member of the team: Got Hope? Yes We Do! “Now this has been our group ever since.”
Melissa’s aunt had breast cancer twice.
“I think just showing up and seeing all the pink and all the support - it’s pretty special,” said team member Barb.
Barb’s parents Jean and Ron made the four-hour trip from Aberdeen, SD to be there, like they have done quite a few years.
“My mother was a cancer survivor,” said Jean. “She had cancer when she was in her 40s and she lived to be 94. My brother is struggling now with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.”
Many other teams had similar stories, and they were united in their support to fight cancer.
Saturday’s event included refreshments, prizes and a silent auction. Each year, prizes are awarded to different teams who participate.
This year’s winner were: Bosom Buddies Boots (largest team); The Real Dominating Donators - 55; High Heel (largest team donation) - The Real Dominating Donators – $4,515; Pink Slippers (most creatively dressed) – Mona’s Memories; Paws for Hope (“pinkest” furry friend) – Jelly Bean & Sophie.
The largest individual walker donation was $1,205 from Roxanne Gutknecht. In all, the event raised $10,500.
“This year, we have set a new record for the amount raised,” said Staci Stredelman, VP of the People Department for the Travel Plaza.
“This was great to see for our 10-year anniversary. Thank you for coming and being part of a great cause!”
All funds are donated to the St. Cloud CentraCare Health Foundation.
