Tons Of Fun At RF Doering Farms

RF Doering Farms had their annual open house event last Saturday.

RF Doering Farms produces four varieties of hops, including Cascade, Columbus, Centennial, and Nugget varieties. They are also currently in the early stages of growing a variety of native plants, such as Cone Flowers, Swamp Milk Weed, and Butterfly Bush, and some varieties such as Sunflowers, Zinnias, and Lillies.

Open house attendees had the opportunity to explore the gardens; sample some of the adult beverages they help to produce, which were provided by Beaver Island Brewing Company and Lupulin Brewing; and check out the petting zoo, featuring rabbits, guinea pigs, turkeys, chickens, ducks, cats and dogs. Searles on Fifth Avenue helped to host a ticket raffle.

The farm is in the process of welcoming some new animals, such as hair sheep, in the near future. They are also considering a partnership with their neighbors, who run B & J Evergreen, to provide farm and rural education opportunities.

If you missed the open house, you can still visit the farms by appointment. The cost for an appointment is $5 per person, or $20 per family. Trips to the farm will feature a picnic area; hiking trails; small animals with which to play and pet; photo opportunities; strolls through the garden; and an educational experience on farming, animals and plants. You can also purchase soaps, accessories, jellies and pickles (last two available seasonally.)

RF Doering Farms will be hosting another fun event on Sept. 13 for adoptive and foster families. More information is available on their website, www.RFDoeringFarms.com
