Tuesday, at approximately 6:45 p.m., Big Lake officers were dispatched to the 660 block of Red Oak Dr. regarding a welfare check. Dispatch provided information that drew immediate concern for the well being of the female resident.
Brett Pendergrass, 45 of Big Lake, had an outstanding warrant from the Minnesota Dept. of Corrections for felony domestic assault and officers had been attempting to locate him at this residence.
Officers arrived and attempted to make contact with the residents. Officers observed a dog barking and a television and a lamp on in the residence, but no other movement. There was no answer at the door and the female was not answering her phone.
Officer Silas Reek arrived with a robot designed for searching. As Officer Reek was getting the robot ready, Officer Tyler Hecht and Deputy Chief Matt Hayen attempted to break the window of the door to gain entry. As officers attempted to break the glass Pendergrass came to the door yelling not to break it.
Officers ordered Pendergrass to open the door and get onto the ground. Pendergrass said he would open it but did not and continued yelling at the officers. Deputy Chief Hayen kicked the door open and ordered Pendergrass onto the ground. Pendergrass offered resistance. Deputy Chief Hayen ordered Pendergrass onto the ground again and deployed his taser. The taser was successful, and Pendergrass was taken into custody. Pendergrass had a history of resisting officers.
The female was in the residence and unharmed. Pendergrass was transported to the Sherburne County Jail where custody will be transferred to the Minnesota Dept. of Corrections.
