Scout Aids Big Lake Food Shelf

Asher Henning, a scout from Big Lake Troop 93, successfully hosted a hygiene product drive on June 1st to benefit the Big Lake food shelf. The event, which was part of Asher’s Eagle Scout project, resulted in the collection of 1,159 hygiene items and $115 in donations.

Asher, who also competes for the Big Lake MNVL (Minnesota Varsity League) Esports team, combined his passion for gaming with community service by organizing a Super Smash Brothers Esports tournament. The tournament attracted 30 competitors, who were divided into competitive and casual brackets. The entry fee for the tournament was a donation of hygiene products, leading to the impressive collection.

“I approached the Big Lake food shelf to find out what needs they had and how I could help,” Asher explained. “They said that they often have a hard time finding hygiene products to provide. So I thought of a fun and creative way to host a hygiene product drive.”

The event not only highlighted Asher’s dedication to his community but also showcased his ability to innovate and lead. His dual roles as a scout and an esports competitor provided a unique platform to address a critical need in the community.

The Big Lake food shelf has long served as a crucial resource for local families, providing essential items to those in need. Hygiene products, often overlooked, are vital for maintaining health and dignity, and Asher’s initiative has made a significant impact in ensuring these items are available.

Asher’s involvement with the Big Lake MNVL Esports team added an extra layer of excitement to the event. The team recently clinched first place in the state competition, a testament to their skill and dedication. This victory undoubtedly contributed to the tournament’s success, drawing in participants eager to support a worthy cause.

The drive not only met but exceeded expectations, demonstrating the power of combining community service with personal passions. Asher Henning’s efforts have set a high standard for future Eagle Scout projects and have left a lasting positive impact on the Big Lake community.

As the event concluded, Asher expressed his gratitude to all who participated and donated, emphasizing that the success was a collective effort. The hygiene products collected will soon be distributed by the Big Lake food shelf, making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
