Mike Garland Week 4

Day 20: Mike is in Carson and has taken a few days off the trail to heal up his aching feet. He plans on attending a couple Relay for Life events this week and to share his story.

By day 17, Mike had taken 39, 078 steps and is at the 317.94 mile mark of his walk.

Last Saturday he was able to bathe and wash clothes in a river and soak his sore feet. He ran into a “trail angle” named Coppertone who had a cream soda float, banana, apple and a cookie for Mike to enjoy while he rested. Mike discovered Coppertone is originally from Minnesota and had walked the Pacific Coast Trail back in 2006.

Mike has faced red ants, the heat, sore feet and carried a mental burden for quite a while thinking a man and his horse had fallen off a cliff, resulting in the death of the horse. Mike was able to learn from another hiker the horse and rider were indeed okay — just fishing near the river.

Mike was also looking forward to visiting with his wife who planned to make a trip out to see him should she be allowed to take time off her work schedule. In the meantime, he’s holed up in a hotel waiting for his feet to mend.

“Other than my feet, I feel pretty healthy,” he said.
