RF Doering Farms in Clear Lake had their adoptive and foster family event last Saturday. Families with adopted and foster kids were invited to come and check out the farm, feed the animals, and generally have lots of farm fun.
An Event for Adopted and Foster Kids
Shannon Marklowitz, who runs the farm with her husband, Wayne, and her family, said they decided to host the event for kids who really needed something fun in the middle of the chaotic times. All the events take place outside and kids have the opportunity to learn about farms in the process. The farm recently welcomed some goats to the family, and Shannon said that they have been great therapy animals.
The Marklowitzes have several adopted kids themselves. Shannon said they planned the event along with a Facebook support group for adoptive and foster families.
Around 20-some kids showed up for the event, and all had a blast playing with the farm animals.
RF Doering Farms
RF Doering Farms produces four varieties of hops, including Cascade, Columbus, Centennial, and Nugget varieties. They are also currently in the early stages of growing a variety of native plants, such as Cone Flowers, Swamp Milk Weed, and Butterfly Bush, and some varieties such as Sunflowers, Zinnias, and Lillies.
The farm is in the process of welcoming some new animals, such as hair sheep, in the near future. They are also considering a partnership with their neighbors, who run B & J Evergreen, to provide farm and rural education opportunities.
The farm also offers visits by appointment. The cost for an appointment is $5 per person, or $20 per family. Trips to the farm will feature a picnic area; hiking trails; small animals with which to play and pet; photo opportunities; strolls through the garden; and an educational experience on farming, animals and plants. You can also purchase soaps, accessories, jellies and pickles (last two available seasonally.)
