Maintain Your Health Through Holiday Season

From Nov. 23 to Jan. 3, the Becker Community Center will be holding their annual Healthy Through The Holidays fitness challenge for people of all ages.

Their goal is to help people maintain their nutrition and health over the holidays with a fun, six-week program.

Tracey Otto of the BCC is the coordinator of the event and she says the challenge is for all people in the local area, not just members of the fitness center.

“This is a challenge for people who are members and for those who are not because we know it would benefit our whole community and not just our patrons,” she said. “We hope to enable people and add energy to people’s goals as they try and stay fit during this difficult health-wise season.”

The program was first organized two years ago when the BCC got 15 people signed up for the program. The following year, the program was tweaked a little and just 12 people accepted the challenge.

So far, this year, Otto has 30 participants. She credits that increase to the people who have  partook in the challenge in the past and they have spread the word.

Otto and several fitness instructors will be running the event in which each participant will receive a program packet that outlines the daily and weekly challenges as well as the bonus challenges. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers and there will be weekly incentive prizes as well.

Otto says there are no weigh-ins with the program being run on a point reward system. Points are earned each day for working out and eating right.

Some of the daily challenges include eating healthy proteins for breakfast, drinking lots of water, eliminating sugar from the diet, exercising, curbing your food intake and getting lots of rest.

The challenge will also feature both an individual and a team challenge component. Six daily challenges and a bonus challenge will be in play in which each participant or team can earn points.

In addition, members will have a weekly challenge in which they can earn incentive prizes.

The daily challenges will be the same throughout the six weeks with the hope that commitment and persistence will pay off.

Teams and individuals will have weekly tracking sheets to turn in every Monday and prizes can be picked up on Wednesdays of the same week.

Otto says that even though the program has commenced this weekend, there’s still time for those interested to jump on board and get involved.

The cost is $15 for members and $50 for non-members which includes a six-week pass to the BCC for the duration of the program.
