Local Voters More Conservative Than State

The long anticipated election results are in after voter turn-out in a mid-term election was up, showing voters had plenty on their minds.

In the state, Gov. Mark Dayton won his race against challenger Jeff Johnson, 989,045 votes to 879,515.

Al Franken beat out Mike McFadden, 1,053,023 to 850,499 to return to the Senate in Washington.

Sherburne County has 50,837 registered voters. Of those, 23,285 turned out to cast their ballot.

While most of the state voted along DFL party lines, Sherburne County voters differed from the rest of the state.

Were the Senate race to have taken place in Sherburne County, McFadden would have been on his way to Washington with 17,390 votes to Franken’s 11,745 votes.

Sherburne County voters also voted for Jeff Johnson and Bill Kuisle over Dayton and Tina Smith by 17,795 votes to 10,784 votes.

Republicans in Dist. 6 elected Tom Emmer to replace Michele Bachmann. Emmer had 133,324 votes. Democratic challenger and Mayor of Sartell Joe Perske had 90,921 votes.
In Dist. 15B, incumbent Republican Jim Newberger defeated Brian Johnson, 4,946 votes to 2,327 votes.

In Dist. 30A, Republican Incumbent Nick Zerwas defeated his challenger Brenden Ellingboe, 9,263 votes to 4,220 votes.

Sherburne County voters favored the Republican candidate in all the state races, including Secretary of State, where they voted for Dan Severson over Steve Simon, the state winner, 17,693 votes to 9,644 votes.

Sherburne County voted for Republican Randy Gilbert 15,127 votes over winner Rebecca Otto, with 11,913 votes for State auditor.

They also voted for Republican Scott Newman for Attorney General with 15,148 votes over winner DFL Lori Swanson, who earned 12,135 votes in Sherburne County.

While statewide the Democrats held their own, Republicans came away  victors in the State House, which promises an interesting year ahead in Minnesota politics.
