Graduation: Boyer’s skill leads him to Gustavus-Adolphus

After a stellar high school career playing soccer for the Bulldogs, Becker Senior Micah Boyer will pursue his post-secondary education at Gustavus Adolphus College.

“I went to visit Gustavus in the winter so the tour was shorter than normal, but the community seemed to be very inclusive,” Boyer said of his campus tour.  “My interest in Gustavus initially began because I have a few connections to the school, plus it has very good programs for the fields I am interested in.”

At Becker, Boyer became the all-time leading scorer in Bulldog soccer program history with 52 goals.  He was a three year All-Mississippi8 Conference selection and he also served as a captain for both the soccer and rugby teams. This past season, Boyer and his teammates made the best soccer playoff run in program history all the way to the Section championship.

This fall, he will take his scoring touch to St. Peter, MN as a member of the Golden Gusties soccer team.

“There aren’t many soccer players in Becker that challenge themselves at the next level, but I know he’s not finished competing yet,” Becker soccer coach Nick Crowley said of Boyer.  “He’s smart, tenacious, and always trying to find the back of the net. He’s goal oriented and driven, so I know Micah will do well at Gustavus.”

Boyer is confident he found the right “fit” for both his academics — engineering or pre-law are both interests — and his pursuit of playing the sport he loves collegiately.

“After contacting the coach of the Gusties, I found that I had a decent chance of playing soccer for a great team at a school that really interested me,” Boyer said.  “On my tour, everyone I met was very kind and the campus is amazing — the view of the town at the top of the hill really surprised me. I’m especially looking forward to the next step in my life, making new friends, and experiencing a different life past high school.”

As Boyer reflects on his time in high school, he says he is most thankful for his family, which has close connections to the community.  His mom, Chantel, is a long-time school teacher and administrator at Becker Public Schools, while his father Corey is a former Finance Director for the City of Becker who now works in the private sector.  As the youngest of four boys, Micah said the family competitiveness helped him to thrive and succeed.

“Since I was young I have always been too competitive with my brothers, and ever since my oldest brother, Logan, could drive, he would take us to the local soccer field where we would spend an hour or more getting touches on the ball,” Micah says.  “I had a drive to try my best to be better than my brothers, and now that I am older I can understand that my brothers pushed me to try to be my best. They have taught me so much beyond soccer.”

His thankfulness also extends to his parents, as Micah says values and ethics were an important part of his upbringing.

“My parents have always pushed me, whether in school, in soccer, or just through life,” Micah says.  “They are very honest and that is something I really appreciate. Since I was a kid they have taught me what is right and what is wrong.”
