Lakeside Park in Big Lake will be the place to be next Saturday as a large crane is expected to place a large granite stone just to the north of the parking lot and in the southwest area of Lakeside Park.
A large flatbed truck is expected to transport the large boulder from the St. Cloud region to the park’s location in Big Lake. From there, a large crane is expected to lift the boulder from the truck and place it in its resting place. It should be quite a sight!
Coordinators Karen Blake and Linda Paulson have been working with the City of Big Lake to accomplish this project in which a large rock will be painted by a local artist in honor of all veterans of all military groups.
Iowa native Ray Sorensen has been hired to paint a patriotic scene on the massive boulder following its placement Sept. 19. Sorensen has a mission to paint at least one FREEDOM ROCK in every state of the union. Sorensen painted his first FREEDOM ROCK in Menlo, IA as a way to say “thank you” to veterans who have served our country. His goal is to represent each city, county or state in a unique way while telling stories of our country’s history.
The cost of the project is estimated between $10-20,000 and much has already been donated. However, the coordinators are looking for help from the public by selling pavers which will encircle the rock in the park. Pavers are $100 each and can feature a name and service time for anyone’s loved veteran.
