Briggs Lake store burglars arrested after chase

Three men were arrested early Friday, April 14, after stealing an ATM from Briggs Lake General Store in Palmer Twp. and later leading deputies on a chase after deputies located their getaway vehicle, according to Sheriff Joel Brott.

Deputies were called to the store, in the 4200 block of 105th Avenue Southeast in Palmer Twp., just before 4 a.m. Burglars had broken in through the front door and took the ATM, Brott said.

Security cameras captured at least two of the suspects and the vehicle they used during the burglary. Dispatch broadcast a description of the vehicle to deputies.

Within minutes of the description being broadcast, deputies spotted the getaway vehicle leaving the area and attempted a traffic stop.

The driver of the getaway vehicle did not stop, and a pursuit ensued. Deputies eventually ended the pursuit and arrested the three men in the getaway vehicle.

Arrested were Johnathan L. Axelson, 51, of Minneapolis, Daniel P. Johnson, 40, of Spencer, Iowa, and Robert V. McKevitt, 36, of Spirit Lake, Iowa.
