BL Cheerleaders host Lions Youth Day

Big Lake Lions Youth Day took place Saturday, Sept. 12. The Big Lake Lions Club along with the Big Lake High School cheerleading team hosted the event at Lions Park in Big Lake Twp.

Activities for Kids

Some of the kids’ activities included kickball, soccer, camp games and songs, and coloring books. The Big Lake cheerleaders also planned to lead a cheer for the kids.

Unfortunately, the drizzly weather scared off the families that had shown interest in attending, so the planned activities didn’t take place.

Park Maintenance

The event was not all for naught, however. Not to be discouraged or slowed down by the setback, the cheerleaders picked up shovels and other equipment and got to work doing maintenance around the park. After finishing that, they did some team building exercises. Big Lake Police Chief Joel Scharf showed up later to say hello to the team as well. In all, the day was a success in spite of the lack of kids.

Cheerleader Booster Events

The Big Lake cheerleader’s coach Derek Nelson said that he hoped to make the Youth Day an annual event for the team. He said that this year, the event came together in about a month’s time, which limited the amount of time they had to raise awareness and advertise their event. Next year, they hope to give themselves more time to prepare.

The Cheerleader’s Booster Club will be holding another fun event next weekend to raise funds for the group. The students will be running a haunted house at the Sherburne County fairgrounds Sept. 25-27. There will also be food vendors and a “scare zone” where patrons can sit and eat while taking in the spooky atmosphere. For more information,  visit TasteOfTerrorMN.com.
