Big Lake Online: Providing Flexible Learning Alternatives

(Editor’s Note: The following article was submitted to the Patriot by Big Lake Schools Communications/PR Specialist Morgan Prokosch,)

Big Lake Online, the fully accredited online school of Big Lake Schools, proudly provides K-12 students an alternative to traditional in-person education, and a chance to “think and learn differently.”

In 2021, Big Lake Schools created Big Lake Online as a response to the pandemic. Three years later, Big Lake Online has turned into a solid option that is here to stay, with over 500 full or part-time students.

Big Lake Online is available for students statewide, and provides full time options for students in grades K-12, and part-time options for high school students. According to the program coordinator Nathan Benjie Hamrin, online school offers the best of both worlds. Students experience a flexible self-paced learning environment with full access to support and programs provided by the district Big Lake Schools.

“Big Lake Online is an out-of-the-box solution for those looking for something different,” Hamrin said. “We offer a curriculum with rigor, and our teachers go above and beyond to meet students where they are at to promote success.”

The self-paced curriculum aligns with state standards, and all students receive guidance from licensed Big Lake teachers. In addition, students receive Social Emotional Learning (SEL) support from social workers and counselors, as well as technology support for district-issued devices. Students also have the option to participate in all district programs and activities, including the Big Lake High School’s nationally-acclaimed college and career readiness programs.

Many families choose Big Lake Online because of its flexibility and how it supports all family and personal life situations. Students can build the school day around their schedule.

“There is not a one-size-fits-all approach,” said Tanya Gilberts, Big Lake Online K-5 Teacher. “I love being able to work alongside families who decide to do school differently, and for so many various reasons.”

Students may split time between two houses, have a medical concern that causes them to miss a lot of school, need to work during the day, or find that traditional in-person learning isn’t working for them due to personal reasons. Some students and families simply prefer to be able to complete work quickly within the comforts at home, and use the remaining time each day to explore hobbies and extracurriculars. No matter the reason, Big Lake Online allows students to complete their education whenever and wherever they are in Minnesota. It’s an incredible option!

“I chose to take online classes because I am a very independent person, so it is just very good for my work style,” said a current 11th grade Big Lake Online student. “I am also an athlete, so I am missing a lot of the end hours of the day due to game schedules, so having online is just easier for me to get it all done at home.”

Despite the program being primarily online, program leaders are mindful to create opportunities for students to make connections and interact with teachers and peers face-to-face.

“We understand how important it is for kids to engage socially,” Hamrin said. “There are opportunities to engage throughout the year to make all students feel like a Big Lake Hornet!”

Elementary students engage in regularly scheduled class Zoom calls, and are invited to attend monthly connection events. Secondary students are invited to attend prom, walk at the district graduation ceremony, and participate in sports and other activities.

Program leaders are excited to see how much Big Lake Online has grown over the past few years and have their sights set on a bright future.

“We are proud of this program and thankful to our Big Lake School Board, district administration, and everyone else that has been involved for promoting and supporting another option for our community,” Hamrin said.
