Thirteen Becker freshmen have qualified for the state History Day competition at the U. of M. Twin Cities campus Sat, May 3. National History Day is part of the ninth-grade U.S. History curriculum at BHS, and participating in the competition gives students the opportunity to engage in real historical research and develop the critical thinking skills they need to meet state standards in U.S. History. This year’s theme was “Rights and Responsibilities”, according to BHS media specialist Nancy Lorentz.
The medal winners and their individual projects are listed as follows: Sophia Christenson: Individual Website -- “The Stamp Act of 1765”. Briannna Corey: Individual Website -- “Roe v. Wade”. Kami Ziebarth: Individual Website -- “Loving v. Virginia”. Rachel Tauer and Daisy Kent: Group Documentary -- “Loving v. Virginia”. Jasmine Johnson and Heidi Voigt: Group Website-- “Katz v. United States: Privacy in Public Places”. Macy Erson and Brinley Zoller: Group Website -- “Nez Perce Treaty 1863”. Alaina Nelson, Gabby Proefrock, Carly Pruszinske & Nicole Larrison: Group Performance -- “Tinker v. Des Moines,” students’ rights to freedom of expression. Bridget Buchholz: Individual Website -- “Dred Scott Case,” a slave sues the government for his freedom.
All of these students are working hard to fine-tune their projects, Lorentz said, and all hope to have the opportunity to represent BHS at the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland at College Park in June.
Two students received honorable mention at the regional contest at Gustavus Adolphus: Morgan Tillman: Individual Website—“Vietnam P.O.W.s and the American Government.”; Laura Niday: Individual Exhibit -- “The Bonus Army”.
