Becker High School’s drama club put on their production of “10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse” last weekend.
Surviving the Apocalypse
The drama club’s usual production of a musical was cancelled this year due to COVID-19. Instead, students put on a short, Halloween-appropriate play, “10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse.” Actors portrayed various methods for dealing with zombies in a post-apocalyptic world, including ingenious methods such as “run faster than the zombies,” “raid the Pentagon for superior weapons,” and “romance the zombies,” among others. The actors even portrayed their martial arts skills to the tune of Kung Foo Fighting by Carl Douglas.
“We figured we had to let them dance a little, since the musical was cancelled,” said Joe Rand, drama club director.
Opening Night Around 50-60 people sat in the audience for the play’s opening night. Although a bit chilly, the weather was clear for the outdoor production. Colored lights on the set illuminated the players as the sun set.
COVID-19
The musical, which usually takes place around the holiday season, was cancelled this year due to COVID-19. So the play was very COVID-friendly. The whole production took place outside, in the small grassy area behind the Performing Arts Center. No more than 250 spectators were allowed to attend, and household groups were sectioned off by painted white circles.
All attendees were required to wear masks, as were the actors. One of the narrators posed the question of why, in the horrible, disease-ridden, post-apocalyptic setting of the play, did the characters need to wear masks? “Because of COVID, of course,” was the cheeky answer.
