The new Federal ID known as a Minnesota Real ID may soon cause realities every citizen will wish they’d known before it’s too late. Support for this Federal ID system is based on claims we soon cannot fly without a federalized Real ID.
While it can be argued the federal government can regulate people from flying for just cause; there are no legal grounds to say the federal government has authority to impose a national identification system, certainly not one officially documented to increase data breaches and is less secure. Nor is cause established to give our state’s authority for protection and control of personal identities and freedoms to the federal government. This Federal Real ID law was in-fact slipped into an appropriations bill in the night without testimony.
Proponents also claim it offers citizens a choice. But this perceived choice is based upon Department of Homeland Security statements while the federal Real ID law does not permit a choice.
Numerous serious issues can be heard in the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Hearings on February 7th for Senate File 166 at http://mnsenate.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&clip_id=1159 with specific testimony at 34 minutes. Please call our state and federal legislators to defeat this legislation.
