To The Editor

It appears to me, and probably to the majority of the public, that this is a no-brainer, for the City Council. It makes no sense to spend over $50,000 of taxpayers' dollars, to convince lost patrons of our Community Center they should return. Instead of competing unfairly, why not work with the businesses find some common ground that helps everybody. Being competitive is fine, except when public money is spent to the detriment of local fitness center business. Wouldn't it be a better choice to spend those tax dollars to address the public needs of current citizenry?

I understand that Becker recently spent $55,000 for equipment, that Minneapolis found to be too expensive and most would agree that their needs supersede ours on the demand scale. Maybe we need to take better care of other Becker taxpayers first, and then after our citizens are taken care of, there will be plenty of time to revisit the appropriate use of all city owned facilities and the efficiency of current expenditures.

There seems to be a disconnect between what the city leaders want, and the needs of city residents and business. Do we really need to spend multi-millions of dollars for more city office space, when our tax levy rates are headed for an economically dysfunctional city? I'm 81 and I bet I'll be around to see it happen. Our city council is elected to serve the taxpayers, and to make decisions that are in our best interest.
