To The Editor

There appears to be an absence of motivation to seek resolution of issues faced by the city.

When issues are brought forward I have seen a diversion of focusing on the issue and even avoiding accountability rather than seeking solutions. Our leaders are elected to represent their constituents (taxpayers) and to make decisions in their regard. Isn’t that what you want?

The reality is that we are a city of dichotomies. Although our leaders are elected to work together in our best interest that doesn’t appear to be happening in Becker.

Public servants are expected to make judgements with regard to the taxpayer’s best interest without regard to personal feelings. It is not who or what they like personally, but taxpayers ask their officials to make goodjudgments for their constituents.

A prime example may be two groups with apparent opposing goals, such as faced with the major transportation corridor separating our city. Mn/DOT has a job to do and basically they must meet the traffic demands to safely move people and good through our city. This is just like may other cities in or along any corridor so it has likely been done before.

On the other hand we may have unique local needs that require special attention and modified solutions. I believe that solutions can be found whereby “most of the needs and some of the wants” can be served to the satisfaction of both sides. This is not easy, but common sense and open discussions will usually lead to a satisfactory outcome that both sides can live with. It may not be perfect but both sides agree to live with it.

Attention to addressing public safety and public cost will be necessary, but when overall agreement is reached; details can usually be worked out.
Money is always a concern but at the top  you will usually see safety at the primary concern. The secret will be to get adequate representation on both sides of this dichotomy to reach an equitable solution.
