On Wednesday, the Sherburne History Center hosted a lecture on Ellis Island. The lecture was presented by Renae Elert, a teacher from Apple Valley Eastview High School. Elert presented many pictures, and described the island from its early days as an oyster fishing island to its development and use as an immigration station, and from there to its current use as a museum site. The audience was invited to share their family connections to Ellis Island and to ask questions.
The Winter Lecture Series at SHC features local historians, teachers, and authors speaking on a wide variety of topics. The lectures are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of January – March at 2:00 pm. There is no cost to attend and all are welcome. The March lectures will feature author Jeffery Williams on the 14th, speaking on Minnesota in the Civil War, and author Colin Mustful on the 28th, speaking on the research he did for his books on the U.S. – Dakota War.
