Westin, Nuest reach 1,000 point milestone in win over Vikings

Tuesday night was a special moment for the Becker girls basketball team, as a pair of stalwart Bulldogs achieved the 1,000 career point milestone in a 75-30 win over the North Branch Vikings.

“This was special as both girls have been instrumental in our amazing run over the last five years,” Coach Dan Baird said after the game. “Both these players have put the team first and have played ball the right way.”

In addition to the impressive individual scoring records, the duo (along with Ayla Brown) also keep racking up career wins.

“Every time these girls get a win they break the school record for career wins by players which now sits at 108,” Baird added.  “Tonight was special. Dani showed off her three point prowess, while Maren of course tried to get everyone else going before she just decided to take over. Both have represented Becker so well on and off the court over the last five seasons!”

The game itself was never in doubt, as Becker held the Vikings to just 13 first half points and eight field goals for the entire game. Offensively, the Bulldogs hit 17 three-pointers on the evening.

With the win, Becker moved to 9-2 overall on the season and a perfect 5-0 in the Mississippi 8 Conference. The Bulldogs are currently ranked #2 in the state in Class AAA.

Becker scoring: Nuest 18, Westin 14, Hannah Dierkes 9, Brown 8, Madi Bass 14, Alexa Voller 2, Lauren Croal 2, Adele Changamire 6, Evelyn Kreft 1, Liz Mackedanz 2.

Last Thursday, the team knocked off Chisago Lakes for another M8 win, 84-50.

“Dani Nuest led the way with 20 points on some hot first half shooting,” Baird said. “Madi Bass sparked us by coming off the bench and connecting on three threes for a career high 13 points.”

Baird said his team’s ability to take care of the ball and score in transition were keys to the game.

“We won the turnover battle 12 to 26 which tells the bigger story, as we held a 35 to 2 points off turnovers advantage.”

Becker scoring: Nuest 20, Westin 12 (6 rebounds), Hannah Dierkes 6, Ayla Brown 12 (4 assists), Reese Hausmann 7, Madi Bass 13,Adele Changamire 2, Avery Johnson 5, Evelyn Kreft 2, Liz Mackedanz 5.
