Three titles for Becker wrestlers

The Becker wrestling team had a successful tournament last Saturday in Hutchinson, as the Bulldogs finished second as a team and claimed three individual weight class titles.

Watertown Mayer - Mayer Lutheran won the team portion of the event with 195.5 team points, while the Bulldogs were close behind (194 points) in the ten team field.

Three Bulldogs wrestled their way to individual weight class titles: Kaden Nicolas (126), Adam Jurek (160) and Tyson Ricker (182).

Nicolas pushed his overall season record to 28-3 with a fall at 3:20 in the finals at his weight class, while Jurek (25-5 season record) went to overtime before scoring a 5-3 sudden victory. Ricker scored a 4-1 decision in his final match to bring home the hardware.

Other Bulldog place winners included: second place, Drew May (138); third place, Bennett Kujawa (106), Landen Kujawa (132), Jake Rosenow (145), Ethan Duncombe (152); fourth place, Owen Angell (170); fifth place, Dylan Weber (195); sixth place, Ryan Boecker, Nolan Muellner, Boston Kuschel and Tyler Hall.

Bluejacakets

Last Thursday, the Bulldogs wrestled a crazy Mississippi 8 Conference dual against Cambridge-Isanti and came out on top, 35-27.

The match saw a total of six lead changes, as the two teams traded blows on the mat.

The Bulldogs jumped out on top with decision wins at 106 (Bennett Kujawa) and 113 (Blayne Kuschel) before the Bluejackets took two straight matches for a lead.

Nicolas scored a first period fall for the Bulldogs at 126, followed by a Ryan Boecker decision at 138 as Becker reclaimed the advantage.

From there, the Bluejackets reeled off another pair of wins before Ethan Duncombe wrestled up a weight class (160) for a major decision (14-6) and Becker led 20-18. It would be short-lived, as they dropped the next match and then Owen Angell also wrestled up a weight (182) and scored a fall with just two seconds remaining in the match for a 26-24 Becker edge.

Becker again fell behind, but a Tyson Ricker fall at 4:58 of the 220 pound match and a Lance Lysdal 5-2 decision in the 285 pound match clinched the Bulldog win in their closest conference match of the season.

Thursday night, Becker was slated to wrestle at Big Lake for what could determine the M8 Championship. Complete details will be covered in next week’s Patriot.
