Hornet wrestling team impressive at Fargo

The Big Lake wrestling team continued its strong season at the Rumble on the Red meet in Fargo last week. 

The Hornets placed fifth of 61 teams from different parts of the Midwest. Three Big Lakers finished in the top eight, but it was a total team effort, with 10 individuals contributing to the point score.

Christian Noble took the title at 126 pounds and scored 32 team points. The reigning state champ pinned Mason Richter of West Central Area-Ashby-Brandon-Evansville at 0:34. He followed with a pin of Carter Zink of West Fargo Sheyenne 12-4 at 0:11. In the quarterfinals he pinned Alex Diederich of Royalton-Upsala at 5:47. In his semifinal match he pinned Jacob Aho of Forest Lake at 3:00. In the finals, he beat previously undefeated Logan Graf of Rapid City Stevens in sudden victory overtime, 5-3.

At 132, Nolan Reiter scored 23 team points and placed second. He won by tech fall in his first match over Trenton Gillen of Dickinson, 15-0. He followed with another tech fall over Augustus Maughan  of Fargo North, 18-3. In the quarterfinals he beat Kaden DeCoteau of Bismarck Century, 10-5. Then he won a close decision over Logan Butzon of Jackson County Central, 6-5, before losing to Tyson Charmoli of St. Francis, 10-1 in the champioship match.

Heavyweight Kane Lapointe  scored 13 team points and finished seventh. He pinned Reese Willprecht of Perham at 2:53 in his first match. He beat Thomas Moesenthin of Woodbury 8-3. He pinned Martin Owusu  of Prior Lake at 3:23, and pinned Moesenthin at 1:50 in his final match.

At 106 pounds, Ivan Lapointe scored 10 team points with three wins. He pinned Maverick Iverson of Thief River Falls at 4:38. He pinned Tegan Miller of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at 3:33 and he pinned Dominick Neisen of Mahnomen-Waubun at 2:59.

Alex Hanrahan scored eight team points at 195 pounds. He pinned Evan Anderson  of New Prague at 3:10 and he won by injury forfeit over Kaden Holm of Royalton-Upsala.

Zack Smith scored six team points with two wins at 138 pounds. He pinned Dawson Richter  of Dickinsonat 1:39 and won by injury forfeit over Jackson Marr of Forest Lake.

Tyler Dehmer scored six team points at 170 pounds with two wins. He pinned Gage Mueller of Waconia at 5:45, then beat Michael Clifton of Carrington, 9-8. Clifton was 28-1 going into the match.

Cash Stortz added three team points at 113 pounds. He received a bye in his first match. Later, he pinned  Zach Schaefer of Pine Island at 0:57.

At 152, Dillon Browen won one match and added three team points. He beat Bryan Roselles of Rapid City Stevens by major decision, 9-0.

At 182, Brett Bordwell added three team points with an injury forfeit win over Kaleb Porter of West Fargo.

1). Jackson County Central 156.5; 2) Stillwater 145.5; 3). Bismarck 111.5; 4). Waconia 110.5; 5). Big Lake 107.0; 6). Royalton-Upsala 96.5; 7). New Prague 95.5; 8). Rapid City Stevens 79.5; 9). Dawson-Boyd – Lac Qui Parle – Montevideo United 76.5; 10). Wayzata 76.5.

The Hornets compete in an invitational at Eden Prairie Saturday at 9 a.m.
