The Big Lake Track & Field Team competed in its first official meet last Tuesday in Becker, and there were some good performances by the Hornets.

It was an indoor meet, and coaches from all five participating schools took the opportunity to see how many of their untested athletes would do early in the season.

For the Big Lake boys, Owen Layton took the 800 meters in his best time so far in 1:59.55. That puts him eighth on the school’s Top 10 list. Jack Leuer was second in 2:02.47. He was followed by Gavin Flavin (2:16.05) and Trent Erickson (2:18.8) for a 1-2-3-4 sweep of the event.

CJ Mikely had Big Lake’s best time in the 60 meters for fourth place (6.92) and 200 meters for second place (24.42).

Josh Kennedy won the 400 meters in 56.16.

Theo Johnson had the team’s best finish in the 1600 in 5:33.75.

Wouson Nehwah was third in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.73. He also had the best jump for Big Lake in the high jump at 5’4”.

Abe Nebo went 19’1.5” for third in the long jump and 35’10” for fourth in the triple jump.

Kevin Winkelman cleared 9’6” for fifth in the pole vault.

Vishnu Deonarine threw the shot put 31’6” and placed 10th.

The 4x400 relay team of Josh Kennedy, Owen Layton, David Guyse and Leuer won in 3:40.55.

The 4x200 relay team of Josh Dupre, Nebo, Caleb Kennedy and Montell Hester was second in 1:40.94.

The 4x800 team of Judd Layton, Trent Erickson, Guyse and Jack Schmidt was third in 9:21.61.

For the girls, Leah Uphoff finished third in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.91 seconds. She had the fastest time on the team in the 55-meter sprint in 8.10 and also ran the first leg of the 4x200 in 28:31.

In the individual 200 meters,   Shiloh Elliot was eighth in 30.19, with teammate Britta White a step behind in 30.36.

Alayna Boe finished fourth in the pole vault a eight feet even. She was Big Lake’s top high jumper, clearing 4’4” for eighth place.

 Naomi Huizenga went 31’4.25” for second place in the triple jump.

Britta White led the Hornet long jumpers with a leap of 14’1.25,” good for eighth place.

Campbell Slattery had Big Lake’s best finish in the 1600, running 6:03.98 to take seventh.

Tayla Glassman went 23.01 seconds in the wheelchair 455 meters,

Eleonora Piva took fourth in the 400 meters in 67.85. She went 13’6.5” in the long jump and also ran 28.5 seconds as the anchor leg in the 4x200 with Britta White, Emily Edlund and Alivia Voss.

Edlund also led the Hornet shot putters with a throw of 23 feet. Lilliana Janisch was close behind at 22’8”.

The Hornets held an invitational meet Tuesday, results next week.
