The Big Lake Hornet winter sports teams kept busy leading up to and during the holiday break.

Girls Basketball

The Hornet girls basketball team went 0-4 in their latest games to fall to 0-13.

Last Tuesday, (Jan. 4) they hosted Delano and lost by a score of 53-35. Rylie Sternquist led all Hornet scorers with 18. She also had six rebounds, one assist, one steal and one blocked shot. Jessie Moyer had seven points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Jan. 7, they traveled to North Branch and lost another nail-biter, 45-41. Emily Steen led the Hornets with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and five steals. Lexi Moen had 12 points, one rebound and one steal.

North Branch’s Ella Kuhlman led all scorers with 25 points.

Monday, they hit the road for Zimmerman and came home empty-handed, 66-51. Steen had a terrific game, scoring 25 points while adding 13 rebounds, one assist and seven steals to the mix. Sternquist had eight points and a game-high 17 rebounds.

The Thunder had four scorers reach double digits in Samantha Paulsen (17), Payton McEachern (16), Pressly Haas (12) and Abigail Larson (10).

Tuesday, the girls headed to Cambridge-Isanti and lost a tough one, 75-32. Moen had 10 points in the loss while Steen had nine. 

The Bluejacket’s Mikayla Aumer had 29 points for C-I.

Boys Basketball

The Hornet boys split two games this week, losing at home against North Branch last Thursday and beating Cambridge-Isanti this past Tuesday.

In the 66-55 North Branch loss, Big Lake’s Kunz scored 15 points to lead the Hornets. Kade Layton was also in double digits with 10. Adam Rehm of North Branch led all scorers with 23.

In the 82-79 victory over C-I, O’Brien topped all Hornet scorers with 22. Also scoring in double digits were, Kade Layton (16), Owen Layton (14), Kunz (11) and Stepp (11).

Braden Jones of C-I led all scorers with 27.

The Hornets continue a home stretch of games with a matchup with Breck Tuesday before hosting St. Francis Friday, Jan. 21.

Boys Hockey

The Becker/Big Lake hockey squad went 1-3 this past week to bring their record to 2-10.

Last Thursday, Jan. 6 the Eagles hosted Pine City and lost 6-0. Pine City got a goal in the first, three in the second and two in the third to complete the shutout. They had 40 shots compared to 17 for the Eagles.

Last Saturday, BBL traveled to Wahpeton and came away with a 5-0 victory. Jase Tobako got he first goal on assists from Brayden Graning and Jacob Polacec. Four minutes later, Ben Sellner tallied a short-handed goal to make it 2-0.

Jack Beckstrom made it 3-0 with a goal at 5:09 of the second period and followed that up with another goal five minutes later, assisted by Eli Scheideman and Polacec.

Eric Baker topped off the scoring at 12:10 with a power play goal. assisted by Cooper Wright and Jacob Dietsch.

The Eagles finished with 46 shots on goal compared to just eight for Wahpeton.

Tuesday, BBL hosted Cambridge-Isanti and lost 10-3.

The Eagles got goals from Luke Bordson in the first period, Scheideman in the second and Dietsch in the third.

C-I’s Wyatt Lindell had a hat trick in the win as they outshot the Eagles 50-19.
