The Class AAA second ranked Becker Bulldog girls basketball team went on the road last Thursday and used a huge rebounding advantage against a taller Chisago Lakes Wildcat team to come away with a 71-57 win.

“The story in this game was rebounding, as we out-rebounded Chisago Lakes, who is a taller team, 46-21,” Head Coach Dan Baird said. “We had three girls in triple digits...  I imagine this was the first time in school history that three Bulldogs had double digits in rebounding which is unheard of.”

Liz Mackedanz was active on the boards with 12 rebounds, while Dani Nuest also had 12 rebounds and Maren Westin had 11. 

Overall, Baird said it was a better defensive effort than earlier last week when the team dropped a contest to the Willmar Cardinals. Becker held the Wildcats to zero second chance points in the game and just one offensive rebound, both incredible statistics. The Bulldogs also outworked the Wildcats in the paint, holding a 32-12 advantage in scoring from the inside.

“We did a much better job in this matchup containing the basketball,” Baird added.

Offensively, the Bulldogs used a balanced attack to remain undefeated in the Mississippi 8 Conference, with four players in double figures.

Alexis Rose led the way with 19 points, while Adeline Kent was close behind with 17 points, including a 5-for-8 performance from beyond the three-point arc.  Westin added 16 points and Dani Nuest had 11.

The win pushed the Bulldogs’ record to 7-4 overall, including 4-0 in the conference, and Baird was happy his team bounced back from the loss earlier in the week.

“Our team did a nice job,” Baird said. “The Wildcats are the most competitive team in our section, so it was nice to get a big win against them on the road.”

Becker scoring: Rose 19, Kent 17, Westin 16 (six steals), Nuest 11 (eight assists), Mackedanz six (seven deflections), and Lauren Croal two.

Vikings

Tuesday night, the Bulldogs hosted North Branch and played a complete game in all facets of the sport, winning 82-24.

Adeline Kent was unstoppable in both halves of the game, scoring 13 in the first and 16 in the second to finish with 29 points total. 

Defensively, Becker was overpowering for the Vikings, as the North Branch squad never made a trip to the free throw line and had just 10 made field goals the entire game.

Becker led 42-12 at halftime and was in complete control, as 10 different Bulldogs saw action on the court.
