Bulldog boys drop 2 to M8 leaders

The Becker Bulldog boys basketball team dropped a pair of games in the past week to the two teams atop the M8 Conference standings.

Last Friday, the Bulldogs went on the road for a matchup with Cambridge-Isanti to battle the Bluejackets for the top spot in the Mississippi 8. Both teams came into the game with undefeated conference records, and the Bluejackets were on top of their game, winning 69-50 to claim first place.

The Bulldogs lost one of their top offensive threats and rebounders when Brady Paumen left the game within the first two minutes after suffering an apparent injury while blocking a shot.

Becker trailed 37-29 at halftime and couldn’t put together a sustained offensive effort in the second half, as they saw their conference record fall to 4-1.

For the game, Becker shot just 20% (5-for-25) from beyond the three-point line.

“Cambridge-Isanti is a tough team and they move the ball effectively in their offense,” Coach Josh Ihrke said. “I felt we did a good job on the defensive end of the floor and containing them. We unfortunately could not get shots to fall and allowed too many steals and turnovers to keep the game closer.”

Becker scoring: Alex Weiss 11, Kevin Vogl 2, Kyle Vogl 6, Sawyer Brown 5, Julias Hendricks 12, Josh Groskreutz 3, Mitchell Soltau 11.

Tigers

Tuesday night, Becker faced off with the Princeton Tigers, a team with just one conference loss on the season. It was a tough game for the Bulldogs, who were playing without Brady Paumen, as the Tigers asserted themselves in the lane en route to a 81-57 win.

The Tigers are a handful in the paint, and they earned 26 shots at the free throw line, making 17. The Bulldogs managed just nine free throw attempts, making four.

Becker did manage to out-rebound their opponent 39-36, but 21 turnovers doomed the Dogs. Their shooting woes also continued, as they hit just five of 26 three-pointers.

Becker scoring: Ryan Bengtson 6, Weiss 14 (7 rebounds, 5 assists), Kevin Vogl 5, Brown 6, Hendricks 22, Tygen Salvevold 2, Soltau 2 (7 rebounds).
