School Board welcomes new student reps

Monday evening, the Becker School Board met for their regularly scheduled meeting. All board members were present with the exception of Member Ryan Obermoller.

There were no speakers during public comment.

Student Rep.

Student school board representatives spoke during their allotted time. Emilia H. is a new member and the students gave a great report and shared all of the wonderful activities that are happening around the school. 

Fall activities are wrapping up and winter activities are beginning. The students suggested checking out the musical being held at the end of this week. 

The student representatives look to improve this process moving forward.

Schmidt Report

The Superintendent Report from Jeremy Schmidt included updates on Teacher of the Year Awards, LEEA Award Winners, MSBA Annual Conference, Veterans Day Ceremony, MSBA Delegate Assembly and the most recent facility update.

Committee Reports

Committee Reports included an update from Early Childhood. Classes are full with a waiting list. Discussion was made around the new building and possible fundraising revenue sources for a new playground. 

The Finance Committee also provided an update sharing that the December meeting will have the audit presentation, the unassigned fund balance increased due to federal grants, lower expenditures, and conservative budgeting. The ending fund balance was within 1% of the revised budget. 

In addition, the food service budget and the Community Education fund was also discussed.

Consent Agenda

The consent agenda was passed on a unanimous vote with all board members in attendance.

Included in the consent were minutes, financial report, disbursements, and personnel.

Gifts were also approved and recognized on a unanimous vote. 

“Thank you to everyone who has supported our school programs with donations,” said Schmidt.

Election

The election results from November 8, 2022 general and special school board elections were canvassed at the meeting through a unanimous vote. The timeline for filling the special election positions was discussed.

Policies and Plans

Policy 722 had a first reading. It was recommended to have the policy committee meet to discuss options related to the proposal of adopting MSBA model policy 722. Current policy 722 has some concerns that were shared with the board previously. This policy has been tabled during a previous meeting.

The communication plan was discussed and approved on a unanimous vote.

The Meeting was adjourned at 7:19 p.m.
