Local Scouts travel to U.S. camps

Local Boy Scouts from Troop #92 earned awards and traveled to camps in the United States over the last few months.

Ben Scherping earned the Triple Crown award for attending three high adventure Boy Scout camps — Northern Tier in Ely, the Florida Sea Base and the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.

The Scouts left for the Florida Seabase the day after Christmas for a seven-day sailing/scuba diving adventure. The Scouts and Scoutmasters lived on the boats for the time they visited there.

On the way back home, they stopped at the Kennedy Space Center to catch all the sights, sounds and history of the complex. Attractions included getting an up-close, hands-on feel for the story of humans in space.

In Ely, Scouts from Northern Tier’s three wilderness canoe bases get to explore millions of acres of pristine lakes, meandering rivers, dense forests and wetlands in Northern Minnesota, Northwest Ontario and Northeast Manitoba.

The Florida Seabase is a unique Scouting program that offers aquatics programs found nowhere else. Whether one’s interests lie in sailing, scuba diving, rustic camping on an undeveloped barrier island, fishing or a combination of all, this is the place Troops love to visit. Sea Base serves around 16,000 participants annually.
