Gorgeous weather translated into huge crowds that assembled two Saturdays ago on Lake Julia for the sixth annual Ice Day on the Chain.
Fish houses blanketed the lake with eager participants, many of whom were looking to land a lunker for the chance to win a prize in the fishing contest. There were other activities as well, including an ice golf tournament, corn hole, pond hockey and ice skating. All activities at Ice Day are free, although donations are accepted and appreciated.
This year, the first fifty children who signed up for the fishing contest received a free ice fishing rod and reel.
Treats and delicious food were also part of the plan, as visitors could enjoy the hot chocolate stand or wait in line for a free Johnsonville Brat and chips.
According to event organizer Forrest Brothen, 850 brats were served this year at center ice. In addition, both the Palmer House and Brickyard Bar and Grill were offering up delicious beverages in the center ice Hospitality Tent.
Many sponsors of the event have been on board since the first event was held six years ago, while others joined this year in helping to defray the expenses associated with hosting a huge party on the ice. Sponsors included: BLCA, OTTER, Brigg’s Lake General Store, Palmer House, Brickyard Bar and Grill, C&L Distributing, Johnsonville Brats, Absolute Outdoor, Royal Renovations and Barthel Heating and A/C.
Brothen reported that at this year’s celebration, two more sponsors approached him and will be joining the official list in 2024: The Chuba Company and Blank Roots Salon.
“Through the generosity of our sponsors and many cash donations, we are trying very hard to keep this a free event,” Brothen said.
For the second year in a row, the Palmer Powder Hounds sponsored a Vintage Snowmobile Run and Show, and 20 enthusiasts answered the call to display their sled. John Graber donated the plaques for the winning entries. Karen Pike won first place with her 1973 Scorpion Stingrette, Mike Schendzielos finished in second place with his 1990 Ski Doo Mach 1, and Brandon Weis was the third place winner with his 1967 Johnson Ski Horse.
The “official” festivities ended with door prize drawings and the announcement of the winners of the different events, but many people chose to enjoy the incredible weather by sticking around and socializing.
Brothen said that next year’s date is already set: Saturday, February 10. Ice Day on the Chain is always held the Saturday before the Super Bowl.
